Stay at the Gjestegaard – Kasjotten Hotel. It was built in 1863 as a prison and from 1923-1975 it served as an asylum for women. Rebuilt as a hotel in the 1980s, in keeping with the buildings’ original spirit. Most of the interior is intact, including the cell doors, the ceiling joists and the thick walls. There are 38 rooms (24 genuine cells), all rooms are en suite and there are conference rooms, course facilities and a restaurant that serves homemade Norwegian food.
