Visit a fortress this year
- experience new life on historical ground
A particular atmosphere of tranquillity prevails over our venerable old fortresses. Like historical jewels, they adorn the coastline from Vardø in the north to Kristiansand in the south. With their green ramparts, ancient walls and many activities, these fortresses attract artists, tourists and locals.
The fortresses have a lot to offer. Whether you want to take a walk along the coastal path through Fredriksvern Shipyard, take a boat to Oscarsborg Fortress, stroll along the streets of Fredrikstad, see a concert in Bergenhus, or enjoy a good meal at Kristiansten Fortress in Trondheim; these beautiful fortresses can provide wonderful experiences and a unique atmosphere all year round.
Last year Norway’s fourteen national fortresses received almost 1.3 million visitors. The fortresses provide a unique backdrop for many activities and cultural events. Originally built to prevent enemy forces from entering, these historical fortifications stand today as popular tourist attractions with a multitude of experiences and activities for both young and old. Events such as fireworks concerts, markets, operas and festivals all contribute to giving the past a new form of expression. Many of the fortresses have indoor and outdoor cafés and restaurants. Visit a fortress this summer and experience new life on historical ground.
Welcome to our fortresses!
