Eastern Norway » Akershus Fortress

With its many valuable buildings and installations that have been raised over the course of nearly 700 years, Akershus Fortress (Akershus Festning) is one of Norway’s finest and oldest cultural environments. Constructed around the year 1300 by King Håkon V Magnusson, the original building served as a strongly fortified royal residence. It was allowed to tower unrivalled on the top of the Akersnes promontory.
Over the years the fortress played an important role both in times of peace and hostility. Nine sieges put Akershus and the surrounding city through trying times. During the reign of Christian IV the medieval fortress was transformed into a renaissance castle, and today’s city centre was founded below the fortress walls in 1624.
A full programme of events is organised for the summer season; everything from historical plays, concerts, guided tours and military tattoos.
