Eastern Norway » Blaafarveværket and Koboltgruvene
Blaafarveværket was established in 1773 to extract cobalt ore from the local mines. The cobalt was used in the production of cobalt blue pigment for the world’s porcelain and glass industry. Today we are an 8-km long museum in pleasant surroundings with many attractions. Every year we have three new exhibitions of old and modern art at the works, Nyfossum – the director’s house and Th. Kittelsen museum.
We have three cafeterias that all serve home made food. Our shops offer specially crafted cobalt blue glass and jewellery of stones. We can also offer new products specially made for Blaafarveværket. A selection of our home made food is available in our shop to enjoy when you come home.
Remember to visit the splendid Haugfossen waterfall and Nyfossum, the idyllic home and garden of the Technical Director, from the 1820’s.
At the Cobalt Mines you can follow the cobalt veins into the mountain. Experience the special atmosphere of tunnels and chambers inside the mountain. A 1.5 km long minesafari on different levels, during which we will descent 80 m. Our tours can be dapted to our handicapped visitors.
If you want to check out the mines on your own before taking a guided tour you can visit the “children’s mine”. This is free of charge and you do not need a guide to enter the mine. The area around the Cobalt Mines is a nice hiking area. There is two different marked tracks in the area with information about the surroundings from the old days.
