GET THE FEELING OF TOKKE COUNTY!

In the middle of Norway – in the middle of Telemark – in the middle of Tokke County – there you will find Lårdal and Dalen. Nature in Tokke is very varied, with mountains and valleys, lakes and waterways. You really should take a tour and enjoy the countryside. You can wander along marked paths in various landscapes, paddle quiet lakes or go on a safari to see both elk and beaver. In the wintertime you can choose between miles of marked ski tracks, or wide unspoilt snow-covered moorland.

THE TELEMARK CANAL
From the guest-harbours in Dalen and Lårdal (72 meters above sea-level) you may take a trip with one of the old local canal-boats or go along in your own boat or canoe. With the help from 8 locks in 18 lock chambers you may go from the foot of the Hardanger mountain plateau and all the way to the open sea. The boat trip is an adventure in itself with unforgettable scenery framing an exciting cultural landscape.

DALEN HOTEL
"- the most magnificent of them all -"
The opening of the Telemark Canal was the reason for building what many see as the most beautiful hotel in the country. Dating back to 1894, Dalen Hotel was created in the typical Norwegian style of European wood architecture – the dragon style. With its gables and galleries, dragonheads, towers and turrets, it is reminiscent of royal palaces found in fairytales.

In 1994, the hotel underwent an extensive restoration. Today the hotel has its original appearance from the time of King Oscar; still the hotel offers all modern services and comfort demanded by modern guests. The hotel is known for its excellent kitchen and its warm and historic atmosphere.

LÅRDAL
Lårdal is a small, quiet village by the Telemark Canal. It is known for its warm climate and wide variety of plants and trees witch is normally not found so far inland. In mid-summer the fields and hillsides can offer an unbelievable variety of wild flowers. Here you can enjoy the peace and quiet staying at the old hotel by the harbour or in a cabin at the camping site. Lårdal is undiscovered!

RAVEN GORGE
Since tourists first began coming to Tokke the Raven Gorge has been a source of fascination and awe. The gorge has a 350-meter sheer drop down to the river Tokkeåi below! Situated between Dalen and Åmot, the Raven Gorge has an unusual air current, which makes it possible to throw a banknote over the edge and have it blown back by the wind rising up the face of the cliff!

MUSEUMS AND CULTURE IN TOKKE

  • Art gallery on a mountain farm with 10 authentic houses where the sculptress Anne Grimdalen grew up.
  • The Copper mining history from 1540 – 1945 is on display in museum with models and an old smithy with a water wheel. Geology exhibition and 600m path in the mine.
  • The old farm "Vindlaus" has been converted into Norway’s largest open-air museum. There are over 30 buildings. Large museum building with exhibitions of folklore art showing traditions for hundreds of years.

LÅRDALSTIGEN
”Tougher then the Besseggen”
A fantastic footpath between Lårdal and Dalen. A large part of the walk follows the mountain edge up to 800 metres above the Telemark Canal. This is an experience for life! This is a hard walk. Please contact the tourist information before you do this trip the first time. They will give you the information you need.

SPECTACULAR NATURE
The special landscape and nature along the upper part of the Telemark canal in Tokke is an experience not to be missed. It has a drama that many artists have fallen in love with and immortalised on canvas. Many come here to enjoy the natural beauty in peace and quiet, but for those wish an organised tour, however you may wish to travel, we can arrange a package to suit your needs. We can also arrange hire of cycle and canoe for groups or school classes.

Fishing is very popular, and both Bandak and the Tokke River can offer fine trout. The tourist office has fishing licences and maps. We have many marked paths in Tokke, varying from 3-4km to12-15km, often with sites of special interest along the way. The paths rise up from the valley to the high mountains through landscape rich in animal life, plants and geology. The area is known for the orchids which grow here.
