Eastern Norway » Fredriksten Fortress
High above the city of Halden towers Fredriksten Fortress (Fredriksten Festning), one of the country’s best preserved fortifications. The fortress dates back to the 17th century, and serves today as a marvellous arena for imparting history and cultural traditions to modern audiences. Despite Swedish troops laying siege to the fortress on many occasions, they never managed to capture it. Fredriksten Fortress is also known as the site where the Swedish king Charles XII met his death under circumstances of which still remain a mystery today. Was the bullet that killed him fired by a Norwegian gun – or by one of his own? In 1872 the fortress was closed and lost its operative importance for good. Frediksten Fortress can boast a variety of food and dining options, from a simple cup of coffee to an exquisite meal.
