Eastern Norway » Fredriksvern Shipyard
In 1750, King Fredrik V of Denmark decided to have Fredriksvern Shipyard (Fredriksvern Verft) in Stavern built. The town of Stavern is strategically situated between Sweden and Denmark, and the Danish influence is clearly manifested in the architecture and look of the town. Fredriksvern Shipyard served as the main naval base for the Norwegian fleet up until 1850, after which it was used by the Norwegian Army for military training during the summer months and, more recently, by the Norwegian Air Force. Today the shipyard is used for civilian purposes and is open to the public, providing an oasis for visitors in both the summer and winter seasons. During the summer months there are few places that can beat the summery atmosphere of Fredriksvern. It is a popular spot with the locals and offers a full programme of activities during the summer season, including market days, concerts, festivals and exhibitions
