Eastern Norway » Oscarsborg Fortress

oscarsborg festningStrategically situated at Kaholmene in the Drøbak narrows (Drøbaksundet) lies Oscarsborg Fortress (Oscarsborg Festning). Since 1855 this fortress has protected the seaway into the capital city. Oscarsborg Fortress played an important role in Norwegian history by sinking the German battle cruiser Blücher on 9th April 1940. This incident caused a delay which afforded the Norwegian government valuable time to evacuate important personnel from Oslo. The Norwegian King, parliament and government were thereby given the chance to prepare their resistance. After the Second World War the significance of Oscarsborg Fortress as a military fortification diminished. Today this magnificent fortress is a popular attraction for visitors. The history and natural surroundings of Oscarsborg Fortress create a unique setting for courses, conferences and other events
