Eastern Norway » Stor-Elvdal

When you walk through the pine forests to the sound of bird song and feel the soft moss under your feet. When you wander along the banks of the Glomma River, which winds its way through the valley, and you catch a glimpse of a trout or a grayling. Then, you know you have experienced an absolute closeness to real and natural life.

It is in this trinity you will meet Stor-Elvdal, one of the country’s largest districts, 150 km to the border in the north at the Rondane National Park. As well as wolves, bears, wolverines and lynx Stor-Elvdal also has one of the countries largest population of moose.

The Nordic Rhine Valley: The rivers are very important for the district and they are essential for thriving life, business and recreation. Glomma, Norway’s longest river has given Stor-Elvdal its name and flows a hundred km from Atna in the north to Hovda in the south. The water way is also well suited for leisure activities such as rafting, canoeing and fishing.

Happy Holidays: Stor-Elvdal strongly supports holiday cabin development along Vinje road. The massive mountain areas have terrain and location which make the area ideal for both young families and older. The beautiful nature also attracts tourists seeking exiting experiences. Hotels, mountain motels and camping sites welcome guests that seek wilderness experiences, hunting and fishing.

Atna: was a little village in the district which was dying out. But effective and innovative enthusiasts have created nationwide known products such as Atna beer from Atna brewery and Glopheim cafeteria which is a cultural giant in mini form were many of the country’s most known artists perform in retro surroundings from the 1950’s.

Gammelstu Stai: is one of the old beautiful east country farms (Østerdalsgårdene). Here the hosts offer accommodation, farm holidays and not least the delicious meat products from their own sausage factory.

Storstua: is the district’s meeting place with a sports hall, amphitheatre, conference rooms, cinema and various meeting rooms. The distinctive architecture which civil architect Willy Olsen has created with this monumental building has given many inhabitants of Stor-Elvdal a new meeting place.

Winter Night in Rondane: is artist Harald Solberg’s most known painting. At the foot of the grand blue mountains in the Rondane National Park lies the beautiful valley in quietness and peace. The national tourist road between Enden and Folldal is a good choice for travellers that wish to experience Rondane’s grand natural wildness and also sheltered valleys and endless moors.

Koppang Islands: are a lovely piece of Norwegian nature were the landscape winds around Glomma, Norway’s longest river. “Here is Norway’s Rhine valley” said Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson when he saw this beautiful landscape.
