The Historical Museum in the centre of Oslo
The Historical Museum opened to the public in 1904 and is one of Norway’s finest examples of the Jugend (Art Nouveau) architectural style. The ground floor exhibition "From the Ice Age to the coming of Christianity" tells the story of people in Norway from pre-historic, through the Viking period to Medieval times, a period of over 9,000 years. The Coin Cabinet presents Norway’s numismatic history.
The Ethnographic exhibitions present non-Western cultures. The Arctic Exhibition takes visitors on a journey to the indigenous peoples of the Arctic regions, while the Africa Exhibition presents artefacts from various African communities. The East Asia Exhibition provides a backdrop for artefacts from Tibet, Mongolia, China, Japan and Korea. The exhibition America - present - past - identity focuses on the ways in which indigenous people and minorities form their identity and traditions in encounters with the greater society. The classical antiquities exhibits display artefacts and coffins from the Museum’s Greek, Roman, Etruscan and Egyptian collections. In the Historical Museum you will also find temporary exhibitions.
