Eastern Norway » The Silvermines and The Norwegian Mining Museum

Silver was first discovered in the year 1623, and this was the start of a mining period that lasted 335 years. In 1770 Kongsberg was the second largest town in Norway and more than 4 000 men were employed at the Silver Mining Company. Nowadays you may experience this fascinating history both above and below ground! The guides will tell you about peoples' living- and working conditions as well as mining technology, geology, the history of coin making and the glorious history of ski jumping in Kongsberg.

At the museum in the centre of Kongsberg, the Norwegian Mining Museum has put together a collection of some of the most amazing treasures ever extracted from Norwegian mines. Silver nuggets weighing up to 50 kilograms have earned the Kongsberg Silver Mines a reputation across the world.

In Saggrenda, a mine train brings you 2300 meters into the King's mine where professional guides will give you a guided tour. The visiting area is located 342 m below the surface. There is also an exciting treasure-hunt for the children inside the mine. Close to the entrance of the Silver Mines, you may find your own silver, make your own coin and experience the firesetting-method. There is also a museumshop and a café in the same area.

The Silvermines are situated in Saggrenda, 8 kilometres west of Kongsberg, towards Notodden. The museum is located in the centre of Kongsberg.

We offer guided tours in the Silvermines, the Museum, the Church of Kongsberg, the Old Town and the mining landscape. We also organise safaris of certain parts of the mining area. Meals can be served in the Banquet Hall of the King's Mine in connection with guided tours and other events in the mines.
