Eastern Norway » The Vigeland Museum

Oslo’s unique sculpture museum, built by the City of Oslo as a studio, home and future museum for the sculptor Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943) and his work. The museum houses almost Vigeland’s entire production; sculptures in plaster, granite, bronze, marble, wrought iron, thousands of drawings, woodcuts and woodcarvings. In the museums many rooms, you can trace Vigeland’s development from the expressive and slim figurestyle of the 1890’s, portraits and monuments, to the more classical balanced style of his later years. In addition the collection includes all the original plaster models for the sculptures in the Vigeland Park. The artist’s working process is also well documented in the museum. In addition to the permanent collection the Vigeland Museum shows changing exhibitions of contemporary art within the three dimensional field, primarily sculptures, but also installations and video based art.
