Welcome to the wild, surprising, exotic and friendly Varanger

Varanger is located on the shore of the Arctic Ocean in the northernmost part of Europe, 70 degrees north. The wild landscape of Varanger with its round hills and bare mountain plateaus, jagged cliffs teeming with birdlife and ocean full of fish leads to the end of the world, the old fishing village of Hamningberg, where the next stop is the North Pole. The landscape and nature of Varanger is like a multicoloured firework, where the sky and the Arctic Ocean meet in a spectacular colour show. The location in the arctic area gives the region five quite different seasons, all of which have its own special colour and light scheme. The most interesting nature phenomena are midnight sun and aurora borealis.

The exotic culture of Varanger bears witness to a varied past. Reindeer farmers, the Sámi people, Finnish immigrants, Norwegians and Russians have all settled and co-existed by the Varanger fiord. A wide variety of different cultures, languages and traditions have been preserved by the local population. Amazing stories about witch hunt and burning from the 16th century, histories of polar adventurers, visible traces of the Second World War, the northernmost fortress in the world and much more can be found in Varanger.

Varanger offers many good locations for birdwatching. Because Varanger is situated so far north and east, all kinds of rare birds can be seen here. Birds like White Billed Diver, Fulmar, Gannet, Shag, Cormorant, Pintail, King Eider, Stellers Eider, Velvet Scoter, Common Scoter, Goosander, Merlin, Black Grouse, Brunnich's Guillemot and many more can be seen here. Varanger is mentioned as one of 50 unique places for birdwatching in the world. Good sites for birdwatching are Varangerbotn at Varanger Sami Museum where they have a birdwatching booth down by the fiord. Nesseby church, Mortensnes, Vadsø harbor and island, Vardø harbor, Hornøya, and Hamningberg. And any of the small bays along the coast has the possibility of seaduck or sea eagles.

Varanger is an Eldorado for many exciting adventures both during summer and winter. Activities in the wild and exotic arctic nature such as king crab safaris, inland and deep sea fishing, dog sledging, snow mobile safaris, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking and many others will give visitors an unforgettable experience.
