Hedmark » Kongsvinger Fortress
Kongsvinger Fortress (Kongsvinger Festning) was never laid under siege or captured. All the same, it has had strategic significance for the defence of Southern Norway. The Nordic Region in the 17th century was characterised by hostilities. The conflicts arose chiefly from the struggle for power and the conquest of new territories. Towards the end of the 17th century a chain of fortifications was built along the border with Sweden to protect the country from its arch enemy to the east, and Kongsvinger Fortress was one of the most important of these. During the course of the 19th century the fortress lost much of its military significance. Today Kongsvinger Fortress is open to the public, providing guided tours, museum visits, refreshments and overnight accommodation. During the summer season events such as fireworks displays, rock music festivals and gourmet events are arranged.
