Nord-Trøndelag » Hegra Fortress

Hegra FortressHegra Fortress (Hegra Festning) was built to defend against attack from the Swedes following the dissolution of the union between Norway and Sweden in 1905. Two batteries were also constructed, one at Kleivplassen and one at Svartåsen, both situated nearby. In 1940, German troops attempted to besiege Hegra. 190 Norwegian soldiers fought back against the occupying force, managing to hold their ground for 26 days before eventually having to surrender. In addition to being an important national monument, Hegra Fortress continues to be a living fortification. The whole complex has remained intact, with its trenches, tunnels, passageways, living quarters and command tower. The fortress has become an important resource for schools and the rest of the local community. Visitors can take guided tours, visit the museum, and see a photo exhibition from 1905 as well as art and crafts exhibitions. The fortress also has a good café, which is open in the summer.
