Nordland » Gállogieddi Outdoor Museum
The Sami settlement, Gállogieddi is located with a view over large parts of the villages in Lavangseidet. Gállogieddi lies 100 meters above the sea and from here you can see the Ofotfjord. Gállogieddi offers a description of the place: Gállu means “great rock” and gieddi means ”field”, making it the field by the great rock.
Through history the land has been populated by nomadic Sami people migrating with their reindeers from the winter settlements in the Jukkasjärvi area in Sweden and to their summer settlements in this area. Over time the nomads got a more permanent relationship to the coastal area and settled at Gállogieddi. At Gállogieddi outdoor museum you can enjoy Sami culture and its history in the region of Northern Nordland and Southern Troms.
