Saltdal – The National Park County. Saltdal is located just north of the Arctic Circle, and is a beautiful part of Norway between mountains and fjords. This landscape, unique and beautiful, is considered some of Norways finest natural heritage. These areas are therefore largely protected as national parks and nature preserves. This has been done to ensure and encourage public understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of this natural heritage so as to leave it unimpaired for future generations. Two National Parks, Junkerdal National Park and Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park is located in Saltdal. Community.
Saltdal has about 4700 inhabitants. A varied selection of trade, industry, tourism, agriculture, service industries and public sector services. The largest local industry is the worldwide company Nexans Norway AS producing fiber cables for international markets. Saltdalshytta, Norways largest in production of cottages/cabins, is located in Saltdal. Many tourist oriented business are also located here and are important asset to the local economy.
Cultural history.
Saltdals cultural history can be traced back to the Vikings. Production of millstone have been dated to around the year 1000. Millstone was shipped from here by boat to the world market. You can gain insight into the production of millstone at the millstone quarry site in Saksenvik. Rognan and Saltdal had the largest wooden boat building production in Norway in the 1900's. There are plans for a Boat building museum at Rognan, close to the fjord. At Saltdal Museum you will find the Blodveimuseet. The history of the prisoners of war, their living and working conditions at camps during WWII, is depicted here.
Municipality Rognan.
Rognan is the municipal and trade center for Saltdal. With a pedestrian only downtown, clean and child friendly. Here you will find shops, restaurants, cafes, banks, post office and public services etc.

The main road E6 and the railroad runs through Saltdal. The airport at Bodø is located 90 km from Rognan, a short trip by car or train. Saltdal offers several types of accommodations, from hotels to campsites or mountain cabins. Many places to eat, from restaurants to roadside cafes.
