Northern Norway » The Northern Lights Festival

The first Northern Lights Festival was held in 1988, and was based on the classical music. The Northern Lights Festival has over the years presented an impressive list of performers, soloists as well as major orchestras. Among the many we can mention are St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Peking opera, all the Norwegian symphony orchestras, The Norwegian Opera and Ballet, Pratum Integrum, Karelia Philharmonic Orchestra and internationally recognized soloists such as Håkan Hagegård, Leif Ove Andsnes, Truls Mørk, Michala Petri and Yuri Bashmet.

Over time, the musical expression has expanded in several directions, and the festival has reached new audiences by presenting artists such as Jan Garbarek, Mari Boine, Sizzle Ohtaka, Maria Joao, Randy Brecker, Dee Dee Brigdewater, John Surman and Safri Duo. The Finnish folk/rock group Vãrttina put an extra edge to the festival in 2007.

The festival has always sought to show new talent early in their career. Among these we can draw up the Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen and violinists Marianne Thorsen and Henning Kraggerud and the young alto saxophonist / singer / composer Grace Kelly from Boston who visited the festival only 14 years old.

Northern Lights festival's goal today is to be an important music festival that presents quality music and dance from the art field, with particular focus on our neighbors in the east.
