The Polar Bear Pin and our diploma are vivible proof that you are a member in our society, and that you have visited the Nothernmost Town in the World.

The Society preserves our history and culture regarding arctic nature, way of living, and the people. in our exhibition, you will find a great collection of arctic animals and birds. The Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society was established in 1963 to preserve Hammerfest´s history and long tradition with fishing and hunting in the Arctic. The Society has over 220.000 members from all over the world.

Hammerfest lies on the boundaries of human existence under Arctic conditions. It makes demands on willpower, drive and creativity. The polar bear is the symbol of the vitality which characterises the community. The exhibition shows the citizen´s mastering of the changing demands which the town has faced throughout its history and how we have managed to live in harmony with the natural resources in order to survive.
