Northern Norway » The Tourist Office in Moskenes

The island of Moskenesøy is located in the untamed, western part of the Lofoten Islands. The island is surrounded by strong tidal currents like the Sundstraumen strait, and the infamous and feared Maelstrom - one of the strongest maelstroms in the world. Sheer, jagged mountain peaks, with the sea at their feet, form a towering setting for the tiny, picturesque fishing villages.

The cosy fishermen's cabins (Norw. = rorbu) often stand one after the other on poles along the shore of the fishing villages. Most of them have now been refurbished to accommodate holidaymakers, and can offer a high standard of comfort. The old, distinctive characteristics remain in tact, however, and the rorbu cabins can still tell their centuries old tales about the Lofoten Fishery.
