The Stenersen Museum, which is located right in the heart of the capital, is part of the City of Oslo, Agency for Cultural Affairs. It displays a representative selection of Norwegian art from 1850 to 1970 in three permanent collections, all of which were donated to the city at one time or another: The Amaldus Nilesen and Ludvig O. Ravensberg painting collections, and Rolf E. Stenersen's bequest to the City of Oslo. The latter collection includes works by Edvard Munch, Ludvig Karsten, Rolf Nesch, Kai Fjell and Jakob Weidemann. Ravensberg's collection is seldom shown to the public.

The Museum also organises alternating exhibitions of Norwegian and international art, mainly of a contemporary nature.
