Fredrikstad and Hvaler – islands and fortress town

Where the river Glomma meets the sea and where northern Europe’s best preserved fortress town was founded almost 450 years ago, you will find Fredrikstad and Hvaler. Here you will find much of Norway’s history in one spot, with historical relics from ancient times, the middle ages and of course the exuberant 18th century. Leave the summer traffic on the E6, 25 kilometres from the border, and take the historic road towards the coast and Fredrikstad.

The Old Town is one of Norway’s best preserved fortress towns and the most pleasant little spot in the world in summertime. The promenade teems with life in the summer and offers food and entertainment for every taste.
