Sogn og Fjordane » Turtagrø Hotel

where the mountains touch the sky

Way to the west in Jotunheimen, 884 metres over sea level, is Turtagrø, where you can find extreme mountaineering or simply enjoy a stroll through the heather. You are always welcome here, whether you choose to stay in one of our hotel suites or pitch a tent outside. At Turtagrø you are free to do as you please: our aim is to ensure an out-of-the-ordinary experience for you. The mountains are of course the framework for a stay at Turtagrø, but we are determined to maintain the feel-good factor as you come home from your excursion. Hence the fine cuisine based on local raw materials here in the town centre. And why not end the day in front of the fireplace with a classic book from our comprehensive mountain library? We open for Easter and close at the end of September. During the season at Turtagrø we organize a range of activities including guided mountain tours, alpine ski touring, avalanche training, yoga and photography courses, and film and music nights.

Welcome to the mountains!

History
It all started in the 1870s when the highland farmer and reindeer hunter Ola Berge gave food and shelter to mountain travellers in his milking shed. The hotel has been family owned since its formal establishment in 1888. The name Turtagrø comes from the Alpine sow thistle (turt in Norwegian), a beautiful blue wildflower almost a metre tall, that thrives in the area, especially around the old farmsteads.

Activities and Location
Turtagrø is situated in Jotunheimen, which has a special place in the hearts of Norwegians. From east to west in Jotunheimen the landscape gradually rises, steeper and more jagged. Farthest west you will find Hurrungane, a distinctive grouping of 24 peaks over 2000 metres including Store Skagastølstind (2405 meters above sea level). The mountains can offer everything from alpine tours (on foot and skiing) to climbing, glacier trekking, caving and hiking excursions in varied terrain. The spectacular scenery can be enjoyed on your own or with a guide. Turtagrø works closely with Norgesguidene, which offers tours led by internationally approved guides with a thorough knowledge of the region.

Amenities
The hotel was built in 1888; following a fire in 2001, a new modern main building was completed in 2002. Standards and price vary according to which building you choose: the main building is of a high standard, with bathrooms in every room, while Swiss Villa, which dates from 1888, offers bunk beds and common bathroom/toilet. In addition to its renowned mountain library, the hotel also has its own movie theatre and a conference room.
