Sør-Trøndelag » Kristiansten Fortress

Kristiansten FortressIn the centre of Trondheim’s city landscape lies Kristiansten Fortress (Kristiansen Festning). Ever since the late 17th century the fortress has played an important role in the fortification of Trondheim. With its metre-thick white walls encircled by green ramparts, the fortress is a magnificent sight on the heights to the east of the city centre. The fortress’s ramparts, walls and keep were mostly built during the period 1682-1684 under the supervision of Cicignon and Coucheron. Extensive renovation work has recently been carried out on the complex, including the former commandant’s residence. Today the former military presence has been replaced by a broad spectrum of activities for young and old throughout the summer season, in addition to guided tours and the serving of food and refreshments. There is also an activity trail with fun-filled mathematical quizzes along the way.
