LIFE IN ICE AND LIGHT
Svalbard Museum offers fragments of Svalbard’s 400 years of natural- and cultural history. True artifacts, pictures and sceneries are presented in a chronological exhibition, giving you glimpses of people’s lives through centuries in this arctic environment. There will also be a changing exhibition based on local history.
Some of the excavations and findings from Svalbard, such as recent discoveries of fossil marine reptiles, are on display. In the museum you will find information about the newly established Svalbard Global Seed Vault which is built in the permafrost, deep down in the mountains of Svalbard, designed to store duplicates of seeds from around the world. The museum is also responsible for carrying out more traditional museum tasks such as collection, documentation and preservation.
The museum shop offers a wide selection of Svalbard- and arctic literature in several languages, souvenirs, postcards, maps and posters, fossils and jewelry designed by local artists.
Svalbard Museum is a part of “The gateway to Svalbard” which holds the Tourist Information Office, The Governor of Svalbard’s environmental Information and the University Centre in Svalbard – UNIS.
