Telemark » Heddal Stave Church
Norway’s largest stave church, built in the 11/1200’s, and still in use. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and was a Catholic church until the reformation in 1537.
Rose painting from the 1600s, ”The Bishops’s Chair” and incense burner from the Middle Ages. Alter piece and most of the murals are from the 1600s. Approx. a quarter of the wood materials are from the 11/1200s. Richly carved portals from the Middle Ages, and gallery around the entire church with runic inscription.
Guided tours in Norwegian, English and German. Service facilities, cafeteria, and exhibitions in the Church Hall just beside the chuch.
