EUROPE’S MOST SPECTACULAR TRAIN JOURNEYS !
The Norwegian State Railways covers more than 4.000 kilometers (2.500 miles). Approx. 775 tunnels and more than 3.000 bridges carry the trains through mountains and across rivers. Most of the railway run through "tourist country", presenting continuous panoramas of unspoiled scenic beauty.
The best know railway is the 470 km Bergen Railway that crosses the high mountain range between Oslo and Bergen. For a distance of about 100 kilometers the trains run across a windswept and treeless mountain plateau, awesome in its bleak solitude.
The famous Flåm Railway (private railway) starts from the junction at Myrdal on the Bergen Railway (see www.Flåmsbana.no )
The journey by the Dovre Railway from Oslo through the Gudbrandsdal, crossing Dovre mountains at 1025 meters above sea level, is a memorable experience. It affords you a cross-section of Norway’s inland countryside, from broad farmlands, lakes, rivers and forests to narrow valleys and mountain plateaus, rich in flora and unique bird life.
The 114 km Rauma Railway from Dombås to Åndalsnes is the most beautiful train journey. The steep, fairytale descent to the alpine-like mountain massif and the beautiful Romsdalsfjord make this trip an unforgettable experience. During the summer season all trains on the Rauma Railway are run as sightseeing tripswith slower speed, photo stops and audio commentaries.
Another great tourist attraction is the Nordland Railway, stretching 730 kilometers from Trondheim to Bodø. It is NSB’s longest main railway and one of the few railways to cross the artic circle. This railway stretch is very scenic, with view of the glacier Svartisen, rivers and fjords. It is called the train of the midnight sun.
