Troms » Nord-Troms Museum
North Troms Museum is an ecomuseum with responsibility for the six municipalities Storfjord, Lyngen, Kåfjord, Skjervøy, Nordreisa and Kvænangen in North-Norway. The region is inhabited by the indigenous Sámi, the ethnic minority Kven and the majority population of Norwegians. North Troms Museum’s main goal is to acquire, conserve, research, communicate and exhibit material and immaterial culture that relates to these groups.
In line with the eco-museum concept, the museum does not consist of one single building with exhibitions. Since 1979 the museum has restored more that 90 building, of which 30 now is open to the public. Amongst these buildings is one farmstead in each of the municipalities and each farm shows different aspects of the culture of Northern Troms, from fisher-farmer subsistence, to Saami and Kven way of life, from rich to poor.
