Troms » Trondenes Fort
One of the World’s Largest Land-Based Cannons
At Trondenes fort just outside Harstad lies the Adolf Gun in a beautiful natural setting. The Gun is the largest remaining of the land-based naval guns placed at the coastal forts that made up the Atlantic Wall.. The calibre of the cannon’s barrel is 40.6 cm, and the cannon’s range is 56 km. The cannon battery was constructed by the German occupying forces during World War II. All four cannons are intact, and one of them – the Adolf gun – is currently an open museum.
In the bunker below the cannon there is an exhibition showing its history, construction and intended use. Since the cannon is now exhibited inside a military zone, it can only be visited during guided tours, which are arranged by the local tourist office several times daily during the summer months.
