The SØRLANDET is the oldest full-rigged ship in operation in the world today, and represents a unique heritage from the days of the tall ships and fast clippers. Formerly a school ship for the training of young cadets, she is now owned and operated by a public foundation, controlled and partly funded by the Norwegian Department of Culture. She was built in Kristiansand, Norway, in 1927.

The SØRLANDET is offered for charter (lease) to companies, organisations, including schools, and ports for the use of sailing trips of shorter or longer durations and for participating in port festivals. She has carried out major official tasks for the Norwegian government and large firms both in Norway and abroad.

The SØRLANDET is unique, a versatile sailing ship, famed for her beauty and elegance and friendly atmosphere. The Sørlandet friendship cruises are famous the world over, and open to people of all nationalities between 15 – 70 years of age. No previous sailing experience is needed. The SØRLANDET has a capacity of 70 trainees. She is 499 gross tons, 64 metres long and has a mast height of 34 metres. With all 27 sails set (sail area of 1.236 m2) she can make a speed of 12 knots under fair winds. Under engine power she can make 9 knots.

HRH Crown princess Mette-Marit is the ships’ high protector.
